The Ultimate Guide to Polypropylene

Polypropylene is a thermoplastic polymer used widely in labware. It belongs to the group of polyolefins and is partially crystalline and non-polar. Polypropylene’s chemical structure is similar to polyethylene, but each unit of the chain has a methyl group attached. It’s slightly harder and more heat resistant than polyethylene, and offers the best stress-crack resitance of all the polyolefins. And as with all polyolefins, polypropylene is non-toxic, non-contaminating and lighter than water.

In it’s homopolymer form, Polypropylene is used to make products where strength, autoclavability and stress-crack resitance are required. Such items usually include; carboys, autoclave baskets, vacuum flasks and vials. Caps are often Polypropylene regardless of the container material because of its ability to make the ideal seal between dissimilar materials and its high stress-crack resistance.

Polypropylene has a high chemical resistance to a wide range of chemicals. However, when conducting any experiment it’s imperative that the limits of the material you’re using are known.

Be sure to follow all autoclave instructions provided with your Polypropylene labware. Typically, the recommended autoclave cycle for Polypropylene is 121°C at 15 psi for 20 minutes. It is important that air is free to circulate in, around and out containers throughout the cycle, especially during the venting and cooling stages. Not properly venting containers can result in collapse or implosion. Cap threads must be completely disengaged from the container threads.

Aging of Polypropylene

Polypropylene is subject to aging over time, and is susceptible to UV degradation. Polyproylne labware should be replaced when permanent discolouration occurs. Repeated use of an autoclave will speed up the aging process. To maximise the life of your Polypropylene labware, be sure to store them in cabinets out of direct contact from light, use only with suitable chemicals, and wash with a pH-neutral detergent.

Chemical resistance chart​

Due to its surface inertness, Polypropylene is chemically resistant and compatible with many sample chemistries and solvents. It is the optimal choice when working with proteins and an excellent choice when working with pH sensitive samples.

In general, Polypropylene offers good resistance to non-oxidising acids and bases, fats and most organic solvents. It is NOT compatible with strong oxidants. At raised temperatures, it can be dissolved in non-polar sovlents such as Xylene, Tetralin and Decalin.
