Polypropylene Temperature & Chemical Resistance

Polypropylene has a high chemical resistance to a wide range of chemicals. This makes it the material of choice for a lot of Chromatography experiments. However, when conducting any experiment it’s imperative that the limits of the material you’re using are known. 

Temperature limits

  • Melting point: 160°C (320°F)
  • Max operational temperature: 135°C (275°F)
  • Lower temperature limit: 0°C (32°F) below which it becomes brittle

Chemical resistance chart

Due to its surface inertness, Polypropylene is chemically resistant and compatible with many sample chemistries and solvents. It is the optimal choice when working with proteins and an excellent choice when working with pH sensitive samples.

In general, Polypropylene offers good resistance to non-oxidising acids and bases, fats and most organic solvents. It is NOT compatible with strong oxidants. At raised temperatures, it can be dissolved in non-polar sovlents such as Xylene, Tetralin and Decalin.
